What to Watch: Bucs host Pats in preseason battle

Tonight is a big day for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After last week's loss to Tennessee in the second preseason game, many of the questions that were erased after the first contest reappeared. There are three things to keep an eye on for Tampa tonight. Here they are...

1) Rookie running back to the rescue? LeGarrette Blount is a bit banged up, so expect first round pick Doug Martin of Boise State to get a chance to shine. The little man can do it all and will need to this season, aiming to create a two-headed monster in the backfield for Greg Schiano. Josh Freeman will likely look to air it out a bit, so expect more carries for this guy in the second quarter.

2) Pressure -- One of the worst parts of the Bucs defense in years past has been the defensive line, or lack there of. The team has failed over and over again to get consistent pressure. Look for the team to blitz tonight and try and prove its worth.

3) Return game -- Somebody needs to step up and become the returner for the Bucs. Who is it going to be? There are several candidates, but one to keep an eye on is Preston Parker. He has the ability to break free. Let's see who steps it up tonight and gets closer, perhaps, to winning the job.

Time to honor Ronde Barber

We all know what Ronde Barber has meant to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers over his career. The star CB, who came out of Virginia, dominated big-time wide receivers throughout his career. He gave Bucs fans many fantastic memories, including the game-clinching interception on Donovan McNabb in the 2002 NFC Championship Game. Now, the team plans on honoring the future Hall of Famer.

The team will honor him in Week 1 at home against the Carolina Panthers as Barber will be making his 200th career start.

Below is a tad of info from the team's official site in regards to tickets.

Tickets for the home opener, where Barber will be recognized for his 200th consecutive start and a number of other incredible achievements, will go on sale to the public on June 29, several weeks before the remaining games on the Bucs' 2012 home slate.

LeGrand jerseys for sale

(ICON SMI)

Nearly everyone who loves sports knows about Eric LeGrand's battle. The former Rutgers football player, who under Greg Schiano, suffered a horrific injury in college, one that left him in a wheel chair. LeGrand was signed by the Buccaneers recently, and well, it is now your time to help out.

Here is a report from TBO.com about what's going on:

Proudly wearing his No. 52 Tampa Bay Buccaneers jersey at team headquarters, paralyzed former Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand announced Tuesday that the jersey is now on sale, with all proceeds benefitting his foundation for spinal injury research and support.

LeGrand made the announcement at One Buccaneer Place as he sat beside his former college coach, first-year Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano, during a press conference that was streamed live on the Bucs' website.

Schiano and the Bucs signed LeGrand to an NFL contract as an undrafted free agent in May. The contract includes no salary, but allowed LeGrand to fulfill his dream of being an NFL player.

"People talk about heroes," Schiano said. "This guy is, in my book, a true hero and a true inspiration."

The Eric LeGrand Foundation Game jersey is available on the Bucs website for $99.95. It is a special event item produced by Nike in conjunction with Rutgers, IMG and the Bucs.

The Eric LeGrand Foundation will help with spinal cord research and assist other victims of severe spinal cord injury with financial assistance and other forms of support.

LeGrand, who attended the Bucs voluntary workout Tuesday and spoke to the team, said it's all part of his mission to inspire others with his story and turn a potentially devastating negative into a tremendous positive.

"Good things happen to good people," said LeGrand, who vows to walk again. "When you believe in yourself and believe in the Lord above, anything is possible.

"I'm out there trying to inspire a whole world of people and change the world, one day at a time."

LeGrand believes his positive attitude and his faith already have made a difference doctors said wouldn't after he broke two vertebrae in his neck and suffered severe spinal cord damage during a Rutgers game against Army two years ago.

He said he has some feeling below his neck, which he described as "twitches" and "jolts" in his fingers, triceps and biceps.

"Things the doctors said would never happen," LeGrand said. "That's what they can't explain, because they've never seen it before. I can't explain it, because they can't explain it."

LeGrand said his message to his new teammates was simple.

"I want them to appreciate what they have. They get to make a lot of money doing the thing they love," he said. "Don't take anything for granted that a lot of people don't have. Appreciate everything you have."

LeGrand said it has been his dream to be in the NFL ever since he was a young child. Being in the Bucs headquarters, around the players and watching drills he was so familiar with from his time at Rutgers made it all real Tuesday.

"Being around an NFL team, around NFL players is the greatest feeling in the world," he said. "I feel like I'm part of a team. I'm blessed."

Bucs sign Martin, Barron still unsigned

The Bucs signed first round pick Doug Martin out of Boise State. Here is the official release from the Tampa Bay website:

Late in the evening of April 26, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers moved swiftly and decisively up into the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft in order to nab Boise State running back Doug Martin. Now, the Buccaneers and Martin have worked just as quickly to get the rookie back under contract, well before the start of the team's 2012 training camp.

On Monday, the Buccaneers announced that they have signed Martin, the 31st overall pick in the draft, to a five-year deal.

The trade on draft night and Monday's signing actually were connected in a way. The Bucs moved up from the top of the second round to ensure that they got their targeted player, but by doing so they also created an option for a longer first contract. Players in the second half of the first round may receive contracts up to five years long, while second-round picks can receive a maximum of four years in their first deals.

Monday's agreement means the Buccaneers have now signed six of the seven players they selected in April's draft. The only remaining player yet to sign is the team's other first-rounder, safety Mark Barron, who was selected seventh overall. Draft picks may work out with their teams during the offseason, as both Barron and Martin have done, but they may not report to training camp without an agreement in place.  The Buccaneers have not had an extended rookie holdout since 1994.

Martin will be in camp on time, and that's good news for the Buccaneers, who intend to utilize him heavily in their 2012 offense. New Head Coach Greg Schiano intends to emphasize the running game, and the addition of Martin to a backfield that already featured LeGarrette Blount could create a very powerful 1-2 punch.

Martin finished his Boise State career with 3,431 yards and 43 touchdowns on 617 carries, averaging 5.6 yards per tote.  As a senior, he was a key figure in the Broncos' juggernaut offense, which scored more than 44.2 points per game.  Martin ran for 1,299 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2011 and was on the watch list for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation's top running back.  To cap his collegiate career, he was named the MVP of the 2011 Maaco Bowl thanks to his 151 yards and one score on the ground as well as his 100-yard kickoff return TD to open the game.

As expected by many draft analysts, Martin was the second running back off the board after Alabama's Trent Richardson, who went third overall to the Cleveland Browns following a trade up with the Minnesota Vikings. Scouts praise Martin for his decisive running style, his strength and the explosiveness with which he hits the hole when running between the tackles.

The Bucs are in good shape with their picks and should sign Barron here soon.

With the rookie additions and in free agency, how many games will Tampa win?

I say 8.

Bucs send Winslow to Seattle

Well, Greg Schiano is making his presence felt. The new coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who does not want any baggage as he nears his first regular season as the top guy in Tampa, send TE Kellen Winslow to the Seattle Seahawks for a seventh round pick in the 2013 draft.

As always, it is time to grade the decision:

Tampa Bay

It depends on how you look at this. Sure, the coach got a guy out of town that would hurt the team, one that has argued with QB Josh Freeman on the sidelines. He is a solid player and a seventh round pick is not much at all, and on top of that, there is not much depth there. Luke Stocker could be a good one, but he is a while away.

The team did sign Dallas Clark to start at tight end, so they do have a veteran there with some injury issues. But, we know that the coach wants guys who have the right head on their shoulders to lead these team forward.  He is making a statement from this. Could Aqib Talib be next?

C-

Seattle

With the QB situation questionable for the Pacific Northwest, you can never have too many weapons. After giving up little for Marshawn Lynch, the team strikes again, giving up nothing for Winslow.

He is another weapon, one that, if he keeps his head on straight, could make a big splash.

Bucs eyeing former Virginia Tech star in second round

So, we know there is a big need at running back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

LeGarrette Blount has shown flashes, but he doesn't seem to have what it takes to be an every-down back in this league.

So, in which direction will TB go? Many experts expect the team to take a corner in the first round, with Trent Richardson possibly going fourth to Cleveland. If that happens, Tampa won't reach for a RB at the fifth spot. So, then, what are the options?

Former Virginia Tech star David Wilson is the option. A star who started one season but ran for over 1,700 yards, setting the school's record, he can do it all. He is dangerous as a returner, pass-catcher and a runner, though sometimes he tries to do too much. He will certainly be available early in the second round and is worth a look. Considering Blount is a power back, Wilson can do it all and would make a nice combination.

What do you think? Does that sound like a decent pick for the Bucs in the second round? If not, who would you aim for?
